I have a daughter who did poorly on math tests because she took too long to finish the tests. She was discouraged by the school counselor from pursuing a career involving math. No one though to take into account the fact that she got every item that she completed correct.

In high school, my best friend and I always tried to be good students. However, she had trouble with standardized tests while I had a knack for them. I could fill out those little bubbles correctly with the facts I memorized while she had a hard time conveying the concepts she understood with just bubbles and no.2 pencils. Her grades were never as good as mine, even though she spent countless more hours studying than I did. When we went to college we found that her grades improved greatly while I struggled to do well. I had a lot of catching up to do. I realize now that the focus on standardized testing was actually harmful to both of our learning. My friend's potential was never fully realized because she was so busy trying to memorize facts for a test. I was never encouraged to fully understand the concepts I was learning because I just relied on testing.

I was improperly evaluated because of standardized testing. I was told I would never make it to college because of my testing scores. I went to college and then to graduate school. Standardized testing is a snapshot but not a video of a student's abilities.
