I have a good friend who was National Honor Society in high school, but always did very poorly on standardized tests. He scored 700 overall on the SATs even though he was a gifted student. It wasn't a case of easy grading, he had significant problems taking standardized tests. It did not even remotely reflect his actual understanding of the material for which he was being tested. I do believe that some students succeed with standardized tests, but if it is known that groups of students don't test well, then it is discriminatory to continue using only that method of assessment.

Washington State utilizes the WASL Test. The new Superintendent of Public Instruction has removed the Math portion requirement and the legislature has approved. The entire test will be remove and a new test will replace it in 2010. Students are taught to pass the test. They are totally under pressure from the district for the kids to pass. It is taught (test) instead of class requirement. Student have drop out to be home schooled and then attend college… standardized testing is a joke in Washington State.. H L Dunkle 206 409-7500

My long time boyfriend has had a desire to attend medical school for many years. He has strong grades from a prestigious college, great work experience, wonderful references, and comes from a family of doctors. However, his MCAT scores were lower than desired. He almost did not get into ANY medical school. Only after some groveling on the part of doctors who know him well was he admitted as one of the last members of his class. He is now president of some student organizations and is in the top 15% of his class. He is especially personable and it is evident that he will have a good bedside manner as a doctor. He is simply not a good standardized test taker.
